Nasty Actions 'May Backfire'
Date: 16 Apr 2010
Dona Ratcliff, election agent for the Conservative Candidate, Andrew Turner, has expressed her disappointment that a number of campaign posters have been vandalised.
Although this has been a relatively isolated problem, Mrs Ratcliff has heard reports of damage caused to posters supporting the candidates of both main parties.
Mrs Ratcliff said:
"This is very childish and rather disappointing. In a democracy, supporters of any candidate should be able to display posters without running the risk of people trespassing on their property to damage them. If I found anybody involved in our campaign doing such a thing I would ask them to leave immediately. On the advice of the elections manager we have reported this criminal damage to the police.
"In any event this may backfire on those responsible. Islanders like to see a good, clean campaign - fair-minded people dislike nasty, underhand attacks on any candidate, and it may even increase their support. If the perpetrators come to light it will cast their party in a very bad light. I hope all candidates and their agents will join me in condemning these actions. Their supporters would be better advised to get out and spend their time drumming up support for them."
